– So the first thing I really want to dig into here is the overall experience of using this device.
– When the Steam Deck dropped back at the end of February, things seemed almost perfect right out of the gate.
– The three games I focused on the most at the time were Elden Ring, Arkham Knight and Tunic, which weirdly enough are all variations of the open world formula and pretty much everything about them couldn’t be more different.
– Depending on how much a smooth frame rate matters to you, the two best ways to play Elden Ring were on the PS5 running the PS4 version of the game or the Steam Deck running at the same settings but a lower resolution with the frame rate capped at 30… and just over three months later that’s still the case.
– Batman Arkham Knight was a weird experience because when it came out back in 2015 the PC port was a complete mess top to bottom and even though now, almost seven years later the issues have mostly been smoothed out, it’s not perfect… unless you play it on the Steam Deck.
– The stuttering that brought high-end rigs to their knees in the past is all but gun and save a few hitches when you fly from island to island, the game holds a rock solid 30fps running at native resolution and high settings.
– Having games like these be playable at all on a handheld was and is an amazing feeling. Having games like these running and looking as good as they do is an even better one.
– Tunic on the other hand was just as good of if not a better overall experience on the Steam Deck because it feels like it was made for it.
– It’s a 10-12 hour game where you always have a clear goal, and its simple yet inspired art design and combat brought me back to playing Link’s Awakening on my GameBoy as a kid in the back of my parents’ Town and Country.
– THANK GOD FOR THE WORM LIGHT
– When Valve announced the Steam Deck they started out with the tagline “Your Games are Going Places” and you know what? The time where the Steam Deck really felt like it was going hard and showing its full potential was when I went on a trip at the end of April to check out wedding venues in Chicago.
– I went on that trip kitted out with my keyboard, my mouse, my external battery and my 3D printed stand ready to do some work but I pretty much ended up playing Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga the whole time.
– And then right at the end of the trip, Valve dropped an update that really changed everything, The Refresh Rate Switching Update.
– They GOTTA come up with better names for these updates…
– It seemed like such a minor change on the surface, but in practice, it really made the Steam Deck feel like it was more than a Nintendo Switch that plays PC games.
– Look, 30fps is fine, I play a lot of games at 30fps like God of War, Days Gone, Elden Ring, the list goes on and on, but when you get a game like Lego Star Wars running at a perfect 40hz and 40fps at high settings, gaming on this thing honestly just doesn’t get better.
– Ever since developers decided they were just going to ignore the thing Unreal Engine 4 and DirectX 12 do where they cache shaders on the fly and cause stutters any time something happens for the first time, it’s been pretty tough to buy games at launch because I know I’m going to have to wait a few months for bugs to be ironed out.
– But now? With this update that allows me to play these games with PRE-CACHED shaders at 40hz and fps? It’s opened things up a ton in such a cool and interesting way that before Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart came out and added in its 40fps at 120hz mode last summer, I never would have even DREAMED of.
