– If you have a Steam Deck, you gotta check this thing out.
– So this is the Nex Dock 360 and while it looks like a sort of generic windows laptop, it’s actually a lot cooler than that.
– The best way I can describe what it is is if you took a laptop and removed everything except the screen, the trackpad, the battery, the keyboard, the speakers and the io.
– As far as I can tell this thing was initially dreamed up as an add-on for Samsung phones and their built-in Dex software that converts your screen layout into something similar to a traditional desktop.
– But if you look at Nex Dock’s website they also feature devices like raspberry pi computers, Windows USB sticks, the PS4, Nintendo Switches, pretty much anything that could benefit from at least a portable display.
– Obviously when I saw this thing though, I immediately thought of the Steam Deck because when you put the two together, you basically have the ultimate portable workstation and it’s kind of incredible.
– As far as the hardware itself goes, if you’ve ever used a higher-end Asus laptop like the G14 or a Lenovo Legion, I’d say it’s about on-par with something like that.
– It’s got a 1080p IPS touch screen that gets plenty bright, the keys are nice and big with some great travel despite it’s thin-ness and the trackpad has a surprisingly satisfying deep click to it.
– And honestly the thing I appreciated most about it when I took it out of the box is that when I plugged my Steam Deck into this thing, It immediately added itself as a second monitor running at the right resolution and there was literally 0 delay between plugging it in and the keyboard and trackpad working. It was totally seamless which is what I think sort of makes it perfect as a portable setup where you might need a little more screen real estate and desktop control in a pinch.
– I’ve had this thing for a couple of weeks now and I actually got it right when my replacement Steam Deck showed up which was honestly perfect timing because…
– Talk about how I had to wipe my Steam Deck when I put the 1TB SSD in and having a whole laptop setup to put everything back where it goes like Heroic Games Launcher, Flatseal, Cider, Discord and of course EmuDeck made the entire process so much easier.
– It also came in super handy when I was setting up the Resident Evil 4 HD Project mod. It would’ve been do-able on the trackpads, but it was a much faster process on the NexDock.
– It also makes the Steam Deck totally viable for writing video scripts, watching YouTube videos and even gaming on its bigger 1080p display for easier to run games like Grim Dawn and Hollow Knight, but if I’m being real I barely used it to game, if at all because you know, gaming on the Steam Deck itself is such a great experience.
– And guys, the price on this thing isn’t as insane as I was expecting either. It’s $369 dollars directly from NexDock and they ship them out pretty quick too.
– I know that $370 is pretty close the $400 you’ll pay for the cheapest Steam Deck, but when you consider that buying a keyboard, a mouse, a monitor and a USB-C hub would add up to about the same price, if not a little more, I think it totally justifies its price.
– But after alll of that praise, I have to get to the NexDock 360’s biggest flaw, power delivery.
– So despite the fact that this thing has its own battery and power passthrough when it’s plugged in, it unfortunately doesn’t output 45w so if you use it with the Steam Deck, the Deck’s battery will drain over time.
