New APU:
The new driver will be of particular interest to those who want to take Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on the road, as the latest installment in the CoD saga only runs on Decks using Windows. Speculation on Reddit(opens in new tab) is that the driver improves the performance of OpenGL, and that it enables hardware accelerated video. It has been noted that the Citra 3DS emulator, which uses OpenGL, runs more smoothly on the Deck after the update — though not as well as it does under SteamOS.

FSR 2.1:
Cyberpunk 2077 from CD PROJEKT RED recently had a big 1.61 patch out, and with it came support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.1.

Previously CP2077 only had FSR 1.0 and the amount of improvements between 1.0 and 2.1 for FSR is crazy. The picture quality is massively improved, as shown with my Dying Light 2 video, and for Cyberpunk 2077 the difference is quite striking. Picture quality pretty close to native resolution, with a vastly improved FPS and frame-timing. It’s like a complete night and day difference.

Performance Boost:
A Steam Deck mod promises to bolster the device’s ability to pump out even more frames per second, while also improving the longevity of the portable powerhouse’s SSD. While this sounds almost too good to be true, these claims appear to mostly hold up, but there are some games and scenarios that may performance decrease based on these changes.

The CryoUtilities suite, developed by CryoByte33, can help boost fps by up to 24%, with the YouTuber offering deep dives into how the Steam Deck mod affects frame rates in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA 5. It can be downloaded for free from GitHub, where you’ll also find installation instructions.

Without getting too technical, the Steam Deck mod essentially allows you to better tune the device to more efficiently use the memory in its RAM and SSD to improve performance.
