I Saved 60 Game Boy Games (And Memories) to My Steam Deck

Some of my favorite childhood memories live inside my old Game Boy cartridges. But over time those cartridges can fail, batteries die, and save files can tragically disappear.

So I decided to take a better shot at preserving my collection.

Using the GB Operator, I backed up around 60 of my original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, AND Modretro Chromatic games (along with their save data), straight to my Steam Deck. Not only that, but I even managed to turn a Modretro Cart into a makeshift FLASH cart which I wasn’t expecting but was a nice bonus!

So today I’ll cover the hardware and software of this surprisingly straightforward tool that lets you play, preserve, and even REWRITE cartridges in some cases.
